What's Arlo up to?

I'm passionate about finding ways to merge scholarship, artistry, and queer community building. Here's a few of my current, recent, and upcoming projects so you can get a sense of my work.

AMS Summer Institute

I spent two weeks of the summer of 2025 at the University of Maryland for the AMS Summer Institute, Musics of the United States: Telling Our Stories. I got to workshop new pedagogical methods for my new course as instructor of record this fall. It was a whirlwind of generating, presenting, and receiving feedback on materials that I can't wait to use in my classroom!

Song, Stage and Screen 2025

I attended the annual Song, Stage and Screen conference for the International Society for the Study of Musicals in Chicago.

I met lots of lovely folks, and won the Oxford University Press Student Prize for my paper "Mythologies of the American Mid/Southwest in The Outsiders (2024)."

SAM 2025 conference

I presented my paper, "Gossip Aesthetics in Musical Theatre Scholarship," which built on my archival research from this past summer at the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts. The presentation lead to wonderful conversations about the ways artists and scholars communicate and build their worlds.

program notes

If you want to hear about music, theatre, musical theatre, and folks who overthink about all of those things, program notes is for you. This newsletter is a way for me to think and write in community with others as I work on my PhD. I share musings, reflections, rants, updates, reviews, and whatever else strikes my fancy.
